Getting Started with
Home Health Lymphedema Therapy

If you are reading this, you may have been recently diagnosed with lymphedema or are looking for ways to manage it. Our goal is to help you understand this condition and guide you through the treatment process in a home health setting.

What Is the Lymphatic System?

The lymphatic system is a crucial part of your body’s immune and circulatory systems. It helps remove waste and proteins, maintain fluid balance, and fight infections. This system is made up of lymph nodes, vessels, and tissues that work together to transport lymph fluid and filter out harmful substances.

What Is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema occurs when the lymphatic system does not function properly, leading to fluid buildup and swelling in the tissues. It most commonly affects the arms or legs but can occur anywhere in the body. Unlike regular swelling, lymphedema fluid contains proteins and waste that must be moved through the lymphatic system for proper drainage.

Lymphedema has different stages, ranging from mild swelling to more advanced cases requiring ongoing management. Without proper care, it is chronic and can be progressive.  It can lead to discomfort, mobility issues, wounds, and a higher risk of infection.

What are the Causes/Risk Factors?

While the cause for lymphedema is not always known, there are some underlying conditions.  These may include circulatory issues, genetic factors, or cancer treatments, among other things. For more information regarding causes or risk factors, click here <insert link 1>.  Your therapist will ask you about your medical history to see if any of these may apply to you.

What is Lymphedema Therapy?

Regardless of the cause, lymphedema is treated with a process called Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT).  It is done in 2 phases.  First is the reduction or decongestive phase, to decongest as much of the excess fluid build up as possible.  The second phase is the maintenance phase where the goal is to prevent fluid build up again. Both phases include some form of compression garments, manual lymph drainage (MLD), and decongestive exercises.  You will be educated and instructed on all aspects during the course of treatment.

The therapist will order the appropriate compression wraps for you after the initial evaluation.  It may take up to 10 days for them to arrive.  Until then, the therapist will begin with other components of the program.

Some insurance plans may not cover the compression supplies. We will coordinate with your home health agency to verify your benefits and explore options for obtaining necessary equipment.

Do you have wounds?

If wound care is necessary, we will provide treatment as part of your care plan.  Ordering wound care supplies will be handled the same as ordering compression garments. Please note that until your supplies arrive,  ask your wound care clinic for sample dressings so we can begin treatment immediately.

What is the Process for Home Health Lymphedema Therapy?

1 . Referral and Home Health Admission

Your physician sends a referral to a home health agency. Once admitted, you can receive care in the comfort of your home. Some insurance plans require a nurse to complete the admission first.

2. Agency Outreach and Setup

The home health agency will contact you to introduce themselves and complete the required setup before therapy begins. This process can take about 2 to 3 weeks.

3. Lymphedema Evaluation and Treatment Plan

After admission is complete, the lymphedema therapist completes the initial evaluation and creates a personalized treatment plan using research-based strategies.

What is your responsibility?

Home Visit Schedule and Space

Lymphedema therapists will be coming to your home, usually twice a week.  Please have a clear/clean space to meet with the therapist.

Scheduling and Communication

The therapist will contact you by phone or text to schedule visits. Please respond as soon as possible to avoid delays. Missed visits may be made up when circumstances allow.

Pet Safety

For everyone’s safety, please secure any pets before the therapist arrives. Even very friendly pets can become protective.
