What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a chronic, progressive condition that occurs when the lymphatic system can't properly drain lymph fluid, leading to fluid buildup and swelling in the soft tissues. Swelling commonly occurs in the upper and lower extremities, abdomen, groin, and face.

Types:

  • Primary - Caused by developmental abnormalities of the lymphatic system or hereditary.

  • Secondary - Caused by injury or another disease that alters either lymphatic production or elimination that may include surgery, cancer/radiation therapy, infection, obesity and other co-morbities like congestive heart failure diabetes, venous insufficiency, and prolonged wounds on the limbs.

Symptoms

  • Swelling (may include fingers or toes)

  • Aching or discomfort

  • A full or heavy sensation

  • Restricted range of movement

  • Tight or shiny skin

  • Advanced stages include fibrotic skin change

  • Blistering wounds

  • Lymphorrhea - Weeping fluid from limbs

  • Hemosiderin staining

  • Lack of indentation in the skin when pressed

  • Hardening and thickening of the skin

  • Small warts or blisters that leak clear fluid

  • Recurring infections

How to start my treatment journey?

Home Health Agency Admission

  • 2-3 weeks processing

  • We'll find you an agency that will take your insurance. Let us know if ayour agency is affiliated with Ultra Therapy

Appointment with Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLTs)

  • A CLT will contact you to schedule an appointment, perform a lymphedema evaluation, and order your supplies.

  • Your Home Health Agency will inform you if supplies are covered by your insurance.

Treatment Plan

  • Compression Bandages

  • Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)

  • Complete Decongestive Exercise

  • Self-Management

  • Pumps

  • Garments

Medical Consultation

Evaluate the patient for lymphedema needs

Send Complete Documents

  • Submit all necessary documents to UTS via email or fax (indicated above) to begin the referral process.

  • IMPORTANT:

    • Ensure the Physician Order Form is fully completed and signed by the physician.

    • Complete the Document Requirements, ensuring all the needed information listed are prepared.

HHA Search

UTS to verify if the patient is with a home health agency (HHA).

 

  • No Current HHA: UTS to find a contracted agency that accepts the patient's insurance

 

  • Admitted to a UTS-contracted HHA:

    • If the patient is already admitted to a HHA that we have a contract with, proceed to step 4.

 

  • Admitted to a Non-Contracted HHA:

    • UTS will contact the agency regarding a potential contract. If the agency declines, we will ask if the patient is willing to switch to our contracted HHA.

Confirmation and Scheduling

UTS staff will call the patient to confirm receipt of the referral and are currently finding a home health agency that services their area and accepts their insurance

 

  • Once admitted, a clinician will be assigned to the patient to schedule an evaluation.

  • You will receive an update on the referral status within 48 hours

    • Alternatively, you can fax them to 214-594-9987.

  • Without Attachment:

    • Directly email the necessary patient information contained in the Therapy Referral Form to our email.

    • Send and E-Referral to our Kinnser.

  • Our scheduling team will review the submitted documents and contact you with an update regarding the next steps
